An Eritrean opposition movement called Brigade Nhamedu is reportedly set to open its office in Ethiopia. Last month, the anti Eritrean group held a conference in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.
Brigade Nhamedu came under spotlight in Europe around 2 years ago when its activists attacked pro Eritrean government festivals in Europe. The group wants to bring about democratic change in Eritrea which has been under the rule of one party and one man without election since independence in 1993.
If Brigade Nhamedu opens office in Ethiopia, it will be second Eritrean opposition group to have a formal office in Ethiopia. In December last year, Eritrean Afar National Congress (EANC), another Eritrean opposition group, inaugurated its office in Semera city which is situated in the Afar region of Ethiopia.
Ethiopia Eritrea relations have been strained for the last two years. Ethiopia is backing anti Eritrean government groups. Last month, Brigade Nhamedu and Eritrean Afar National Congress announced the launch of armed struggle to topple Eritrean government. They said they will launch this armed struggle from Ethiopian Afar region.
Eritrean activists like Kiros Asfaha from Italy, Beyene Gebregziaber from the Netherlands and Habtom Mecheche from UK are playing leading role in organizing Brigade Nhamedu in Ethiopia. They have visited Ethiopia several times in the last two years.
