Rival TPLF groups are engaging in “difficult” talks to hammer out their differences. TPLF, Tigray’s largest and ruling party, has been faced with the worst internal divisions since its formation around five decades ago.
The talks, which began on Saturday, are being mediated by Orthodox, Muslim and Catholic elders. Tigray military and diaspora community members are also taking part in talks. At the request of mediators, rival TPLF groups led by TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and Tigray President Getachew Reda agreed to engage in direct talks.
The talks are being held ahead of a key meeting by Tigray military council on Monday Feb 10. Tigray military council is set to make key decisions on Monday.
TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group demands the removal of Getachew Reda Tigray President who has refused to step down. Tigray military last month sided with Debretsion Gebremichael group.
According to sources familiar with these developments, the talks being held at Planet Hotel in Mekelle, are “difficult”. The two TPLF groups have taken extreme positions which are difficult to be reconciled.
