Tigrayans Protest in Addis Ababa

Tigrayans are protesting in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital today. Hundreds of Addis Ababa residents are holding a peaceful demonstration against rising tension in Tigray.

This week Ethiopian Prime Minister releases a message about Tigray. He said people of Tigray are living in fear of another war. He asked Tigray politicians to solve their issues through dialogue. Tigray military, TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group and Getachew Reda’s Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) are involved in a political dispute.

Military and Debretsion group are calling for the removal of President Getachew Reda from power. Getachew Reda, allegedly backed by federal government of Ethiopia, has vowed to fight any attempt to dismantle his government. In recent days, supporters of both Debretsion and Getachew Reda groups held protest rallies in different cities of Tigray.

Today’s protest rally is Addis Ababa is reportedly backed by the federal government of Ethiopia. Protest without clearance from the government are now allowed in any part of the country. Participants of the rally are chanting slogans calling for peace and saying no to war. They are urging Tigray politicians to solve their issues through dialogue.

While there is fear of looming war in Tigray, Tigray military is scheduled to hold a key meeting on Monday. Key decision are expected to be made at the meeting.
