Eritrea owes huge amounts of money to the Ethiopian airline. It was disclosed today by the Ethiopian Airlines CEO Mesfin Tasew. He said there are substantial amounts of money stuck with Eritrea, particularly related to Ethiopian Airlines, both in dollars and the local currency; the Ethiopian government will communicate with Eritrea to retrieve these funds.
Ethiopian Airlines held a press conference on Monday at the Sky Light Hotel in Addis Ababa, where the airline’s performance report was presented.
Last week, Eritrean Civil Aviation Authority sent a letter to the Ethiopian airlines announcing the suspension of Ethiopian Airlines flights starting from September 30, 2024.
The CEO confirmed that the Ethiopian airlines had received a letter from the Eritrean civil aviation authority. Following the letter sent to Ethiopian Airlines, the Eritrean government issued a statement, accusing Ethiopian airlines of being involved in unfair trade practices. Ethiopian airline CEO termed Eritrean government’s allegations against the Ethiopian airlines as “defamatory”. He said that Eritreans are free to choose any international airlines, but what was published in the Eritrean Civil Authority’s statement about Ethiopian Airlines is not true.
Tasew added that two weeks before the statement, the Eritrean government asked Ethiopian Airlines to increase the number of flights to the capital, Asmara, which contradicts the recent statement Eritrean civil aviation published.
