Eritrea, on Thursday, criticized the UK & Germany for the resumption of national service. In a message published by the Eritrean Information Minister, the Eritrean government lashed at the two government in Europe for resuming national service.
“Eritrea’s National Service was & remains the “hue & cry” of battle for most western countries in their campaigns of defamation. Yet, new buzz around in some EU capitals – London, Bonn – etc. is resumption of National Service due to perceived NS concerns. Duplicity at its best,” said Yemane Gebremeskel the Information Minister of Eritrea.
“Tunnel vision/misperception – willful or otherwise – in political & media circles in Europe on the rationale, statutory provisions, extention due to externalities, & current status is perplexing indeed,” he added.
National service and mandatory military training for students in Eritrea have been source of criticism. Human Rights Organizations and western countries have been criticizing Eritrea for indefinite national service. Military training is mandatory too. Students in the 12th grade have to report at the Sawa military training camp where they have to undergo military training as well as study to pass 12th grade. Failure to join Sawa camp means students cannot continue their studies.
Eritrean government defends mandatory military training for students and national service saying that Sawa is the backbone of Eritrean defense and it serves as a melting pot where youths from different regions and ethnicities turn into pure Eritreans.
