Which Ethiopian Ethnic Group is superior? Why does each group believe it is more gifted and better than others?
Europe as an introduction
During World War II, almost all European countries were devastated. Every infrastructure was turned to dust. Every bit of iron was used to make artillery and bullets, and all the gold, silver, and bronze were sold to buy weapons instead of agricultural machinery. Science was turned against humanity, and religion was used to provoke and inspire people. Both Allied and Axis powers embedded monks and chaplains into military units as part of the war effort (Dayna Barnes, 2023). Propaganda blinded people on both sides. The war was not limited to Europe; European countries and their allies fought in Asia and Africa as well. One example of this war in the Horn of Africa is the Battle of Keren, fought between the British and Italians from February 3rd to March 27th, 1941.
The Devastation of War
The scale of the devastation was evident after the war ended in 1945. Consequently, the European continent lost its power and influence to America.
The Horn of Africa’s Struggles
If we look at the Horn of Africa, war is a familiar problem, as are starvation, hunger, humanitarian crises, and mass exodus. Yet, many people from these countries proudly believe their country or ethnic group possesses a supernatural power that allows them to dominate the region.
Earlier, we discussed the devastation of European countries due to war. One of the many factors that cause war is a feeling of superiority. The Germans and Japanese considered themselves superior races, paving the way for aggressive policies and eventually war.
The problem in the Horn of Africa is not just a superiority complex; an inferiority complex also plays a role. As mentioned before, this region is no stranger to war. Every country has participated in wars with each other at some point: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Sudan, and Djibouti have been enemies at times and allies at others. But the question remains: which ethnic group or country is the best?
The Region’s Strengths
The Horn of Africa is home to diverse and proud ethnicities, each with a rich history. Eritrea’s hard-fought independence is a source of national pride, while Ethiopia’s status as Africa’s only uncolonized nation is a point of honor. Somalia boasts a strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit. Djibouti serves as a strategic hub, and Sudan possesses vast natural resources.
Moving Forward
Even after reading all this, you might still be searching for an answer about who or which one is the most superior. Let’s take a step back and analyze this question objectively. Imagine you, the reader, are from Southeast Asia. From that perspective, these countries might not seem very important in international politics and trade. If you were a politician there, the only attractive aspects of these countries might be their natural resources and strategic location which is God-given.
Looking at modern data from different organizations, we see that all these countries rank low in many areas. Even if we assume some bias in this data, the exodus of their citizens is another clear indicator of challenges.
After World War II, European countries learned their lesson. They signed many agreements and amended laws to protect human dignity, like the Nuremberg Code, with the help of the U.S. They also continued on a path of economic prosperity and integration. Despite its shortcomings, Europe became a prosperous continent again.
Looking back at our region, it’s frustrating to see war after war for decades. Many of us grew up hearing stories about war from our grandparents and even their parents. Today we talk about war while we can’t even move from one country to another without being tortured and killed, we can’t live in our neighbor’s land without being racially profiled, we can’t walk to another country and have tea, and come back without any question. We fight over who has the best army while living abroad, and instigate ethnic hate while we demand to be treated fairly abroad. Above all, we consciously say our army is the best even though one country in the Middle East can defeat our outdated armies with remote control. Nostalgia is best when managed with reality. So, who do you think is superior?
