Hundreds of Orthodox Followers killed in East Gojjam

Hundreds of Orthodox followers and disciples have been killed in East Gojjam zone of the Amhara region. East Gojjam Orthodox Diocese shared details of the killings this week.

East Gojjam is part of the Amhara region, home to a large Orthodox Christian population. The region has been embroiled in a series of conflicts in recent years, driven by a combination of ethnic tensions, political instability, and religious differences.

In the war going on in East Gojjam diocese, more than 599 orthodox including one religious teacher have been killed and more than 780 disciples have been stopped from continuing their religious activities. The diocese announced that in its 43rd regular preaching conference this week.

According to the diocese, most of the orthodox were killed in in Baso Liben and Debre Elias woredas of the East Gojjam zone.

Since last year, deadly intermittent clashes have been ongoing between Amhara Fano fighters and the Ethiopian military in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Fano fighters are predominantly Orthodox. The ongoing conflict in Amhara is political, religious and ethnic.
