Eritrean opposition group, Brigade Nhamedu, held another conference in Ethiopia on Tuesday. This is the second time this month that Ethiopia allowed the Eritrean opposition group to conduct organizational activity on its soil. They held their first convention in Addis Ababa around 2 weeks ago.
Eritrean singers Kiros Asfaha and Temesgen Tewlede participated in the conference which was attended by hundreds of Brigade Nhamedu members. Clad in blue shirts, the BN members expressed their views about need for change in Eritrea.
Eritrean government calls Brigade Nhamedu a ” non Eritrean entity funded by Eritrea’s enemies”. But Brigade Nhamedu members claim that they are fighting for political change in Eritrea where one man and one party have been in power without election for the last 3 decades since the independence of the country. President Isaias Afwerki has been been in power since 1991.
Participants in Tuesday’s conference vowed to reach Asmara to bring about change. They said,” We are in Addis Ababa now. We will go to Mekelle Tigray. Then we will meet in Zalambessa, and soon we will be in Asmara Eritrea.”
The speakers at the conference lashed at the the People’s Front for Democracy and Justice, the ruling party in Eritrea. saying that the party is evil and stands for backward values and the party and President are anti Eritrean. They hoped that soon they would be able to bring about change in Eritrea.
Eritrea has not responded to Ethiopian government’s move of letting Brigade Nhamedu organize in Ethiopia. Both Ethiopia and Eritrea have been backing proxy armed groups against each other before the signing of peace deal in 2018.
