The Eritrean government today reported a huge cyber attack on internet system in Eritrea. Eritrean Information Ministry issued a statement in this regard on Sunday evening.
“A massive cyber-attack was unleashed against Eritrea’s Internet System on Independence Day (Friday, 24 May 2024) at 12:32’:47” hours. The attempt was foiled by the defensive countermeasures deployed promptly, and the network continued its functions without any interruptions,” the ministry stated.
Eritrean minister of information Yemane Gebremeskel also shared ministry’s statement on his social media account. The statement talked about the identity of attackers too. “The identities of the originators, architects, and implementers of the attempted cyber-attack is not alien to the watchful eyes of the Eritrean Government. The whole episode will be divulged in due time,” the ministry said.
Eritrea has one of the lowest internet penetration in East Africa. The country has several internet service providers. Internet speed is extremely slow. Mobile internet is very limited. But there are internet cafes in main cities.
Eritrea celebrated its 31st independence day on Friday. Main celebration was held in Asmara, the capital city, where President Isaias Afwerki delivered a speech and congratulated Eritrean people.
