Knesset Passes Bill to Deport Eritrean Asylum Seekers

Israeli parliament, on Wednesday, passed a bill in preliminary voting to deport those Eritrean asylum seekers in Israel who support Eritrean government.

The bill was submitted by MP Yulia Malinovsky. The bill states that Ministry of Interior must deport those Eritrean asylum seekers who directly or indirectly support the Eritrean government. The MP in recent statements accused Eritrean asylum seekers in Israel of creating security issues in southern Tel Aviv.

Around 10 Eritreans have been killed in Israel in the last 2 years in clashes between Eritrean opposition groups and pro Eritrean government groups. In September 2023, dozens of Eritreans and security officials were injured in clashes. After the September incident, Israeli government started proceedings to deport Eritreans. However the breakout of Israel-Hamas war in October 2023 put the plans to deport Eritreans on the back burner.

According to Yulia Malinovsky, South Tel Aviv has turned into a no go area for Israelis due to criminal activities of Eritrean migrants.

It remains to be seen how Eritrean government will respond to this development. In 2023, Eritrean government accused Mossad, Israeli intelligence agency, of working against Eritrea.
