Abune Basilios Elected as 6th Eritrean Orthodox Patriarch

Abune Basilios has been elected the 6th patriarch of Eritrean Orthodox Church. Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church today conducted election in its headquarters in Asmara.

The electoral board, which chose the new patriarch, consists of the members of the Synod, delegates from the Eritrean monasteries, the Religious scholars council, the Diocese at home and abroad and the theological college. Egyptian Orthodox Church officials attended today’s election. The Patriarch’s official consecration will take place on 26 January 2025, next month.

Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church has been without a patriarch since December 2022 when Abune Qirlos the patriarch passed away. From 2015 till April 2022 also, the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church had no patriarch.
