Another Eritrean opposition group recently held a meeting in Ethiopia. The group called “Transitional Eritrean Government (TEGIE) is based abroad.
This is the 3rd Eritrean opposition which has held a meeting on Ethiopia soil this year. Ethiopian and Eritrean governments have not been on good terms. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki have been avoiding each other at international summits.
According to sources, who wish to remain anonymous, TEGIE held a meeting in Addis Ababa around a month ago. Reportedly, the Ethiopian government officials and TEGIE agreed that TEGIE ID cards be issued to Eritrean migrants in Ethiopia. The Eritrean migrants in Ethiopia with TEGIE ID cards will be protected by the Ethiopian security forces.
Earlier this year, two other Eritrean opposition groups held meetings in Ethiopia; Brigade Nhamedu met in Addis Ababa and Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) held a meeting in the Afar region of Ethiopia reportedly.
While Ethiopia seems to be backing Eritrean opposition groups, Eritrean government is suspected of having links with Ethiopian armed group based in the Amhara region called Fano.
This month, Ethiopian airlines stopped all flights to Eritrea after Eritrean civil aviation authority announced a deadline for the suspension of Ethiopian airline flights. Ethiopia and Eritrea renewed their diplomatic relations in 2018 but new developments indicate that bilateral relations are again getting tense.
