Judiciary Goes on Strike in Mekelle city of Tigray

Judges and prosecutors have gone on strike in the Mekelle city of Tigray. Court services have been suspended temporarily.

The strike was announced after a security incident which happened last week. A courtroom was stormed last week by armed men during the trial of Zewdu Haftu’s murder. Zewdu Haftu, a 32 year old girl, was killed by unidentified assailants on August 19, 2023 while walking in the street with her girlfriend.

One of the accused in Zewdu Haftu murder trial is the son of former Tigray Police Chief. The accused’s family and armed men stormed a court in Mekelle last week where hearing on Zewdu Haftu murder trial was underway. The attackers threatened the judge and court staff.

The judges and prosecutors have gone on strike for fear of their safety. In a related development, the chairman and deputy chairman of Tigray’s supreme court resigned last week. The two were appointed by former Tigray President Getachew Reda who was removed from his position over a month ago by TPLF and Tigray military officers.
