Tigray President Getachew Reda on Thursday extended an olive branch to his rival TPLF faction. Getachew Reda, the interim President of Tigray, is heading a splinter group of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Tigray’s strongest and largest political party. The other TPLF group is led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.
On Thursday, Getachew Reda attended Meskel Demera celebrations held in Mekelle city. Addressing a gathering there he said, ” Let’s leave our pointless differences and give peace a chance.” “Let’s work for the peace of our people and country,” he added.
The offer of reconciliation by Getachew Reda has come at a time when TPLF Debretsion group is demanding the dismantlement of the Tigray interim administration and removal of Getachew Reda from power. Last week, TPLF Debretsion group central committee expelled Getachew Reda and 16 other leaders from the party. The Getachew Reda group refused to recognize this decision.
Debretsion Gebremichael posted a social media message in connection with Meskel Demera yesterday. In his message, he urged the people of Tigray, Tigrayan diaspora and Tigray security force to continue the peaceful political struggle.
In recent statements, Debretsion group has been leveling serious allegations against Getachew Reda group, labelling them as traitors working against the interests of Tigray in collusion with federal government of Ethiopia.
It seems that TPLF Debretsion group is not expected to respond positively to Getachew Reda’s offer of reconciliation.
