Sudanese refugee in Ethiopia

Another Sudanese refugee in Ethiopia has been shot dead. The incident happened in the west Gondar zone of the Amhara region.

Reportedly 3 people, including a Sudanese refugee, were killed in the attack by militants in the West Gondar zone. Two people were injured in the attack. According to the the Ethiopian Refugee and Returnee Service, the incident happened last Sunday, June 16, 2024.

Reportedly a public transport vehicle came under fire. 3 passengers were fatally shot. One of them was a Sudanese refugee woman. After gunmen opened fire on a the public transport vehicle, government security forces rushed to the spot and and exchange of gunfire ensued between security forces and militia members.

Sudanese and Ethiopian officials are sharing conflicting account of how the incident happened. Local government officials say that the attackers did not specifically target Sudanese refugee. They indiscriminately shot at the vehicle. The Sudanese refugee was returning to her shelter after buying medicine. Sudanese sources claim that the attack occurred while a group of Sudanese women were fetching water from a well near the camp. Eight other women were injured in the attack, which involved heavy gunfire.

The administration of West Gondar Zone says that refugees have been repeatedly told not to leave their shelters, but some of them have failed to do so and are facing danger.

Earlier this month, UN Refugee Agency urged Ethiopian government to provide security to the Sudanese refugee as an armed militia members stormed a Sudanese refugee camp killing and robbing refugees. Several such attacks have been reported since the entry of Sudanese refugees in Ethiopia. Around 30,000 Sudanese entered Ethiopia since civil war broke out in Sudan last year. The refugees are based at Awlala, Kumer and other camps in Amhara and Benishangul Gumuz regions of Ethiopia.

The Sudanese refugees, more than a week ago, staged a sit in on Ethiopia-Sudan border demanding return to Sudan.
