Translation in English: Tilahun Gesesse, Teddy Afro, Ali Birra & Mahmoud Ahmed are among the wonderful singers Ethiopia has had. Quote: “When a man is upset, time pushes him like a person and he has no way out, silence is the only hope he has to escape his reality, “says Mahmoud Ahmed in his song “Silence is my answer”. And I tried it (to be silent) for a year.
Today Ethiopian are celebrating Irreechaa which is a celebratory festival. Today is day 2 of this festival. Huge public gatherings were seen in the Oromia region. Irreechaa is mainly celebrated in Oromia. On a festive occasion, publishing of a sombre tweet by the President is making people draw different conclusions about what is behind this tweet.
Sahle-Work Zewde, the Ethiopian President, is one of the most seasoned Ethiopian politicians. She has worked with Derg, EPRDF and Prosperity Party. She hails from the Amhara region where since last year, an armed conflict has been ongoing between Amhara Fano fighters and Ethiopian security forces.
It is being said that she is not happy with the situation in the Amhara region where crippling armed conflict has taken a serious toll on education, economy and other sectors. It is being rumored that she is in disagreement with the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed who is from the Oromia region of Ethiopia.
The position of President in Ethiopia is ceremonial. Real power is held by the Prime Minister. It seems that the President is upset with the situation in her home region. Is she going to make a big decision about her future or is she going to be fired? These questions are being asked. Sahle Work Zewde’s six year term is due to expire this month.
Politicians from the Amhara region, who have been working with the Ethiopian Prime Minister since 2018, are distancing themselves from PM Abiy’s ruling Prosperity Party. Demeke Mekonnen, a senior politician from Amhara, parted his ways with Prosperity Party’s active politics last year. Demeke worked as the Ethiopian Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Yilkal Kifale, former Amhara President, also resigned last year. Gedu Andargachew, former state minister for foreign affairs, has fled Ethiopia. He opposed the imposition of the state of emergency in the Amhara region last year.
