5 Killed in Attack on a Bus on Ethiopia South Sudan Border

At least 5 people have been killed in an attack on a public bus on Ethiopia South Sudan border. The incident happened in the Gambela regional state of Ethiopia, which shares border with South Sudan.

According to Gambela regional government officials, armed men from South Sudan entered the Gambela region on Sunday and opened fire at a public bus. The bus was on its way from from Dimma district to Pinyudo town in Gog district. It had around 50 passengers onboard. The armed men, allegedly from Murle tribe of South Sudan, indiscriminately opened fire at the bus. At least 5 casualties are being confirmed by regional officials. Women and children are also among the killed and injured.

On weekend, Ethiopian Intelligence Chief Redwan Hussein and State Minister Getachew Reda visited South Sudan. Ethiopian government has been mediating between South Sudan President Salva Kirr and his political rival Riek Machar.

Ethiopian Gambela region has been witnessing cross border incursions from South Sudan for years. Last month, hundreds of South Sudanese fighters entered Ethiopian territories in Gambela and removed Ethiopian flag in Lare district.
