Ethiopia today officially responded to a provocative speech by Eritrean President. Isaias Afwerki, the Eritrean President, on Saturday, lashed out at the Ethiopian ruling party. While addressing a gathering in connection with Eritrean Independence Day (May 24) in Asmara, the Eritrean President accused Ethiopian ruling Prosperity Party of creating new agendas like Orumuma, Access to Sea and Nile Basin to destabilize the region.
“Ethiopia has no intention of responding to insults from neighboring countries,” the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson said today. The spokesperson, Nebiyat Getachew, was responding to questions by journalists in weekly press briefing.
“Ethiopia has previously faced unjustified accusations and insults from other neighboring countries at the level of its leaders. However, Ethiopia will continue to engage with neighboring countries through peaceful diplomacy without entering into a conflict,” he concluded.
Ethiopia Eritrea relations deteriorated at the end of 2023 when the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed raised the issue of access to sea. Landlocked Ethiopia wants to gain full rights to a port in a neighboring country, especially in Eritrea.
