Tigray Region Govt Denies having Issued Arrest Warrants of TPLF Leaders

Tigray region interim government, on Monday, denied having issued arrest warrants of Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) leaders.

A news outlet (Asena TV), around 24 hours ago, claimed that Tigray region government led by the President Getachew Reda had issued arrest warrants of TPLF leaders including Debretsion Gebremichael, Fetlework Gebregziaber, Alem Gebrewahid and TDF Generals including General Yohannes, General Migbe etc.

Today, Tigray Region Communication Affairs Bureau denied having issued any arrest warrants. It accused Asena TV of spreading false propaganda to create divisions in Tigray and undermine stability in the Tigray region.

The Tigray government mentioned another false report published by Asena TV recently. It was claimed recently by the same news outlet that Tigray President Getachew Reda and General Tsadkan Gebretesnai had reached a deal with the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed to wage war on Eritrea.

No correction or apology has been been released by the news outlet so far. TPLF, Tigray’s largest political party, is split in two. TPLF Debretsion wants to remove President Getachew Reda from power. Getachew Reda is refusing to step down, warning to take legal action on TPLF Debretsion group. In another related development, Tigray President Getachew Reda suspended Mekelle mayor.

Some experts say that Asena tv is backed by TPLF Debretsion group and the news outlet deliberately released the report about TPLF leaders’ arrest warrants. It is a preemptive move by TPLF Debretsion to stop Getachew Reda’s government from considering issuance of TPLF leaders’ arrest warrants. Others are of the view that TPLF Debretsion intends to make big move soon to remove Getachew Reda from government and it wants to justify its move by using Asena TV’s report.
