Desalegn Chane, an Ethiopian Member of Parliament (MP), on Tuesday criticized the appointment of new Ethiopian Foreign Minister.
Last week, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed appointed Gedion Timotheos as new Ethiopian Foreign Minister. Gedion Tiomtheos replaced Taye Atske Selassie who was elected as the President of Ethiopia this month.
Gedion Timotheos worked as the Justice Minister of Ethiopia before his appointment as FM. The appointment of foreign minister and 4 other ministers were put to vote at the Ethiopian parliament today. Majority of the MPs ratified the appointment.
However, Desalegn Chane, MP from the Amhara region, criticized Gedios Timotheos. He said Gedion is not qualified to be FM. Desalegn is from the National Movement of Amhara (NaMA) political party. He opposes the ongoing military operation against Fano militias in the Amhara region. He was briefly detained a few months ago, but later released. Another NaMA MP from Amhara, Christian Tadele, was arrested over a year ago. He is still in prison. The government accuses these MPs of supporting Fano militias.
Desalegn Chane, in his speech at the House of People’s Representatives today, said that Gedion Timotheos worked as a political too and he supervised atrocities against MPs. He said MPs were dragged, humiliated and detained while they had immunity and minister of Justice did nothing to protect the rights of MPs.
Several members of parliament from the NaMA political party oppose the Prosperity Party led military operation against Amhara militias.
