Tigray Pres Getachew Reda has fled Mekelle, Tigray regional capital. The President escaped while military commanders, aligned with Getachew Reda’s rival TPLF faction, are gradually dismantling his government.
According to local sources, Getachew Reda left Mekelle on Tuesday. He boarded an Ethiopian Airline flight at Alula Aba Nega International Airport in Mekelle city. The flight landed in Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital, late on Tuesday.
On Tuesday, Tigray military commanders disbanded district governments in Adigrat and Adi Gudom. The two local government were supportive of Getachew Reda interim administration.
Getachew Reda, a prominent TPLF leader, was appointed as Tigray interim president in March 2023. Last year, he developed differences with his party. TPLF split in two. Faction led by chairman Debretsion Gebremichael has been demanding the removal of President Getachew Reda. Around a month ago, majority of Tigray military commanders threw their weight behind TPLF Debretsion faction, calling for restructuring (removal) of Getachew Reda led administration.
Tigray military commanders are using force to disband pro Getachew Reda local government. They opened fire at pro Getachew Reda group in Adi Gudom yesterday, leaving 5 injured.
Ethiopian federal government, led by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, has remained largely silent about internal political wrangling in Tigray. The federal government allegedly backs Getachew Reda TPLF group.
