Were Babo woreda chief has been assassinated. The woreda is situated in south Wollo zone of the Amhara region.
Fentaw Kebede, Werebabo woreda general administrator, was shot dead by unknown gunmen today. Another woreda official named Addis Zemen was also killed in the attack.
The woreda chief was on his say in his official vehicle when he came under attack in an area called Abana Genda at around three o’clock on Tuesday afternoon. Unknown attackers opened fire at his vehicle from multiple directions. Fentaw Kebede was killed on the spot. His driver was also killed.
Since mid 2023, an armed conflict between Fano militias and security forces have been ongoing in the Amhara region. Dozens of security and regional government officials have been assassinated in attacks attributed to Fano militias. In 2023, Girma Yeshitila, a senior leader of Amhara Prosperity Party, was killed.
Fano militias generally do not claim responsibility for assassinations. Ambush and assassination are two main tactics employed by Fano fighters against government officials and security personnel.
