Sudanese Military Retakes Presidential Palace

Sudanese military has retaken Presidential Palace. The palace, situated in capital Khartoum, has been under the control of Rapid Support Forces since March 2023.

According to a statement issued by the Sudanese military, it retook control of the presidential palace on Friday morning. Pictures released show soldiers standing at the gates of the heavily damaged palace.

Sudanese civil war began in March 2023 between Military led by General Abdul Fattah al Burhan and Rapid Support Forces led by General Hamdan Dagalo. In the first few months of the war, military suffered territorial losses. RSF seized control of Presidential Palace and other key sites in and near capital Khartoum. General Abdul Fattah al Burhan, the Sudanese military chief, remain trapped at Military Headquarters in Khartoum for several months. RSF, mainly backed by the United Arab Emirates, dreamt of controlling whole Sudan.

Last year, Sudanese military received military support from Egypt, Eritrea, Turkey, Iran and others. The military has been in talks with Russia and China too to purchase modern fighter jets, bombers and air defense systems. After the military received weapon shipments from its partners, battlefield balance tilted in favor of the military. RSF has been losing ground since last year, especially in central Sudan.

Rapid Support Forces, mainly based in Darfur western Sudan, are now in the process of forming a parallel government. They have held meetings with other Sudanese political players in Nairobi Kenya. Sudanese government, led by the military, recently cut off diplomatic ties with Kenya, protesting against RSF’s activities on Kenyan soil.
