Solidarity party led by ex TPLF leader Getachew Reda has announced to hold party congress in Tigray. Tigray Democratic Solidarity, the new political party, was registered by National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) this week. After the preliminary registration, NEBE directed the new party to meet other requirements including holding of party congress.
Redai Halefom, a senior leader of Solidarity party, announced on Thursday that the party will hold its founding congress in Tigray. He said that the Tigray government will be responsible for providing security for the party congress.
New Tigray government led by Tigray People’s Liberation Front and Tigray military removed Getachew Reda from power in March this year. Getachew Reda served as Tigray President for two years. After developing differences with senior TPLF leaders, he and some other TPLF leaders were removed from the party and government.
Getachew Reda and other TPLF defectors are based in Addis Ababa. Their return to Tigray to hold a party congress could lead to political tension between them and TPLF. In some recent interviews Getachew Reda, who is now serving as a State Minister on East Africa Affairs, severely criticized senior TPLF leaders and Tigray military generals. He accused them of being involved in corruption.
No date ate has been announced so far by Getachew Reda party to hold party’s founding congress in Tigray.
