General Tsadkan Gebretensae has returned to Ethiopia after staying abroad for several months.
The General joined Tigray People’s Liberation Front in 1976. After the removal of Derg in 1991, he worked as the Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Force. During Ethiopia Eritrea 1998 war, he developed differences with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi who removed him from the position of Chief of Staff in 2001.
In recent confrontation between TPLF factions led by Debretsion Gebremichael and former Tigray President Getachew Reda, he supported Getachew Reda group. However he stayed in the US during Getachew Reda’s removal from Tigray by Tigray military and TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael earlier this year.
He worked as deputy President in Tigray Interim Government led by Getachew Reda. After the removal of former President Getachew Reda, new Interim Administration has been established, which is led by General Tadesse Werede. Tsadkan is not part of the new Tigray Interim Administration.
He landed in Addis Ababa yesterday after staying in the US with his family for several months. While he is back in Ethiopia, Getachew Reda, ex TPLF, is forming a new political party. Tigray Democratic Solidarity is the new party which is holding its first press briefing today.
Is General Tsakdan Gebretensae going to join Solidarity party? Will he be appointed to a key position in Federal Government? Getachew Reda has been appointed as State Minister for East Africa Affairs. TPLF, led by Debretsion Gebremichael, accuses General Tsadkan and Getachew Reda of creating divisions in TPLF. TPLF leaders further accuse that General Tsadkan and Getachew Reda, backed by the Federal Govt of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, are conspiring to wage war on Eritrea.
