Solidarity Party formed by Getachew Reda, the former President of Tigray, has announced to hold a party congress in the Tigray region within the next 45 days.
The party held its first press conference in Addis Ababa today. Redai Halefom, the party spokesperson, briefed the media about the new party. National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) issued preliminary registration certificate to Tigray Democratic Solidarity a week ago. The party is required to register 4000 members and hold a party congress in the presence of NEBE observers to acquire full registration.
Getachew Reda, Ex TPLF leader who is working as an advisor to the Prime Minister now, was expected to brief the journalist today. However he did not turn up at Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa. Redai Halefom, who briefed the media in place of Getachew Reda, said that the party will start its membership campaign from Monday and within 45 days the party will hold its congress in Tigray.
Redai Halefom invited TPLF members, youths and intellectuals to join the new party. It remains to be been if TPLF, Tigray’s main political party, will allow Solidarity to be organized in Tigray or not. TPLF removed Getachew Reda, a senior Ex TPLF leader, from the party last year. Earlier this year, TPLF and Tigray military removed Getachew Read from his position as Tigray President. Getachew Reda is trying to remain relevant in Tigray’s politics. TPLF and Tigray military accuse Getachew Reda of backed by the federal government of Ethiopia.
