Tigray military council is scheduled to hold a key internal meeting on Monday February 10. Key decision are expected to be made at the meeting. Tigray military commanders have been at loggerheads with Tigray Interim Regional Administration (TIRA) for over two weeks.
According to a letter seen by NewsAddis, Tigray Peace and Security office has asked five representatives of Tigray military in Tigray interim administration to attend a meeting with Tigray military council. The letter is addressed to Tedesse Werede, Teklai Asheber, Fisseha Kidanu, Zewdu Kiros and Dr. Kelali Adhana. The five representatives were selected by military council in 2023 to be part of Tigray interim regional administration (TIRA) led by President Getachew Reda.
Last month, Tigray military commanders asked for restructuring of TIRA including removal of President Getachew Reda. The military announced to withdraw its representatives from TIRA. They expressed their backing for TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group.
Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has been split in two factions for months. The two groups are led by President Getachew Reda and Debretsion Gebremichael. TPLF Debretsion Gebremichael group has been calling for the removal of President Getachew Reda.
Tigray military’s call for restructuring for TIRA was opposed by some senior Tigray military commanders. It is being rumored that General Teklai Asheber and some other senior Tigray military officers are supportive of Getachew Reda government.
It seems that on Monday Tigray military will fully withdraw or replace its representatives in President Getachew Reda’s government.
