Wolkait, disputed territory between Tigray and Amhara regions, is fertile in sesame production. The sesame production in Welkait is exported from Welkait through Metema to Sudan and through Woldia to Djibouti.
Main road leading from Gondar to Bahir Dar, used for the export of Sesame from Welkait, has not been safe for travel for over a year since the start of armed conflict between Fano fighters and Ethiopian security forces.
Reportedly one driver was killed in the attack, several others were injured and 6 trailers were damaged. Fano fighters have not formally claimed responsibility for the attack. But they oppose export of agricultural products through Amhara region.
