Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), an Ethiopian armed group operating in the Oromia region, announced on Wednesday to launch a new offensive against government forces. For years, OLA has been fighting against the Ethiopian security forces. The groups claims to be fighting for the protection of the interests of Oromo people.
“As part of our general objectives to restore sustainable peace and security, uphold human rights and dignity, and build a democratic society, as of today, 28 May 2024, the OLA has begun a selected offensive campaign against the genocidal forces of Abiy Ahmed throughout Oromia in Operation Irbuu Shinnigaa (Martyrs` Covenant). Details will be announced in the days ahead. For our martyrs. For justice. For freedom,” said OLA in a social media statement yesterday.
It remains to be seen what OLA is up to. In recent months, Ethiopian military claimed to have captured several OLA controlled territories. Military says that large number of OLA fighters surrendered this year and OLA has lost the ability to carry out large scale organized attacks. OLA rejects military’s claims saying that govt and military are spreading false propaganda.
What does OLA want to achieve through this new operation? Does it want to recapture lost territories? Does it want to hit government facilities or control towns?
While OLA’s intentions are unclear, fighting is set to intensify in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. Ethiopian government and the Oromo Liberation Army held two rounds of talks in Zanzibar Tanzania last year. The talks were mediated by the US and EU but ended with no progress.
