TPLF Getachew Reda supporters protested today in front of mayor Office in Mekelle city of Tigray.
The youths protests in connection with the dispute regarding appointment of Mekelle mayor. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), Tigray’s largest and ruling party, has split in two factions. Both factions have appointed their mayors to administer the regional capital. Neither of them has been able to assume charge as security forces sealed the mayor office.
Two TPLF factions led by Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael and Interim President Getachew Reda accuse each other of working against the interests of Tigray. Debretsion group appointed Redae Berhe as Mekelle mayor, while Getachew Reda faction appointed Berhane Gebreyesus. Security forces, led by General Tadesse Werede, sensing the danger of collision between the supporters of the two groups, sealed mayor office. For over a month, Mekelle has been without a mayor.
Today dozens of TPLF Getachew Reda supporters protested in front of Mekelle mayor office. They asked security forces to let Berhane Gebreyesus assume charge as the mayor. Displaying placards, waving Tigray flags, they chanted slogans.
The young peaceful protesters said that they will not move from their position until the legitimate mayor enters his office. They said that they will not allow the city to become a center of chaos and unrest. However after protesting for a few hours, they peacefully dispersed from the place of protest.
Tigray security forces, led by General Tadesse Werede, in September this year banned political protests. Since then the two TPLF groups have been carrying out indoor political activities.
