Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed is intervening in Sudan to put an end to the bloody war which broke out more than a year ago in Sudan.
The Prime Minister last week visited Port Sudan and met with Abdul Fattah Al Burhan, the Head of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council and Chief of SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces). Al Burhan welcomed PM Abiy warmly, drove him from Port Sudan airport to military headquarters. Reportedly the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed shared a proposal with the General about how to end the war in Sudan.
PM Abiy Ahmed is on good terms with UAE ruler Mohammed bin Zayd Al Nayhan. Reportedly the Prime Minister was sent to Sudan by the UAE ruler. UAE has been actively backing the Rapid Support Forces led by Hamdan Dagalo since the start of this war. SAF last month lodged a formal complaint with the UN against the UAE, accusing the UAE of supporting RSF. UAE denies the allegations.
The visit by the Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed paved the way for direct contact between Sudanese government and UAE ruler. Two days ago, Al Burhan and Mohammed bin Zayd held a phone call, which is being seen as a breakthrough to end the Sudanese civil war.
In another related development, Birhanu Jula, the Ethiopian military chief, arrived in Juba South Sudan this week. He met with RSF commander Abdulrahim Dagalo, Hamdan Dagalo’s brother. The two met with Salva Kirr, the President of South Sudan. South Sudan’s oil exports have been disrupted. It exports oil through Port Sudan. The oil pipeline passes through both RSF and Sudan military controlled areas. Reportedly, General Jula mediated between South Sudan and RSF to ensure resumption of full scale transportation of oil from South Sudan through Sudan.
Earlier this month, Sudanese civilian groups met in Addis Ababa. Taqadum, led by former Prime Minister Abdullah Hamdok, held a meeting in Addis Ababa.
It is being speculated that Ethiopia could host UAE ruler and Sudanese military chief in coming days. It seems that Ethiopia is actively playing the role of a deal broker between RSF and SAF, RSF and South Sudan, SAF and UAE, SAF and civilian political forces.
