Fano Fighters

Fano fighters have assassinated another government official in the Amhara region. Mrs. Milishu Bekele has been killed.

Mrs. Milishu was working as the head of Kewet district administration. Kewet is situated in North Shewa zone of the Amhara region. She was shot dead while being on the move in a vehicle in Bekele town. Attackers opened fire at her vehicle. In a statement released today, Kewet district administration confirmed her death and blamed extremists for killing her. Reportedly she was pregnant.

Earlier this week, Albs Adefrash, the governor of Ephratana Giddim District in North Shewa Amhara was assassinated.

North Shewa is the most unsafe zone for Prosperity Party leaders and government officials. Several have been killed by Amhara Fano militia fighters since last year. Girma Yeshitila, a senior Amhara Prosperity Party leader, was killed in North Shewa last year. He was a resident of the same zone. Several other government officials were killed in the last few months in Shewa Robit, Arerti, Kewet, Ephratana Gidim, Debre Berhan etc. All these towns are located in North Shewa.

This week. Prosperity Party officials and government buildings came under attack in Woldia city too which is situated in North Wollo zone of the Amhara region. Hand grenades were thrown at the residence of North Wolo Zone Prosperity Office Head and Deputy Head of Woldia City Municipality. Last month, Lasta District Chief Administrator Getachew Melse and District Health Office Head Millionaire Afework were killed in an attack while they were on their way back from a meeting.

Since last year, a military operation has been ongoing against Amhara Fano groups. Fano groups are operating in the form of small guerilla units. Assassination and ambush are two main tactics being used by Fano militias against government officials.
