Jawar Mohammed Accuses Ethiopian Govt of Leaking his Book

Jawar Mohammed, the Ethiopian opposition politician, today accused the Ethiopian government of leaking and illegally distributing his book online.

Jawar last week published his book titled “Hin Gaabbu” in Nuremberg Germany. He tried to launch the book from Kenya, but book launch program was cancelled in Nairobi. He had to go to Europe to launch the book.

In a social media post today he said that the Ethiopian embassy in Nairobi asked him to provide a copy of his book, Before the start of mass printing, he handed over the book to a person named Selam who works at the Ethiopian embassy in Nairobi. Selam sent it to Worku G. who forwarded it to a man called Rahel . Rahel and others scanned, manipulated and uploaded to internet before the start of mass printing, Jawar alleged. He further said that Ethiopian government backed elements replaced some pages and paragraphs before leaking the book online.

He lashed out at the Ethiopian government for the absence of data security, lack of respect for property rights, and intellectual property protections.

He indirectly warned foreign investors against investing in Ethiopia. “This should keep everyone awake – not just friends, but also foes. It is the naked reality about the dire state of rights, security, and data protection in Ethiopia at a time when its officials are declaring their “readiness to welcome” foreign investment in the country, especially in the Banking sector, where this issue of data protection and intellectual property rights are a matter of top priority,” he said.

Earlier this week, Jawar Mohammed urged Ethiopians to buy hard copies of the book to help the distributor recover losses incurred due to leakage of the book online.
