Hundreds of Fano Fighters Surrender In Amhara Region

Hundreds of Fano fighters surrendered to government at Seraba Reform Training Center this week. The training center is situated in the Amhara region of Ethiopia.

In Amhara region, Fano fighters have been fighting the security forces since last year. They want to remove the government of PM Abiy Ahmed.  They have been trying to establish zonal and regional command structures.

According to pro government sources, Fano fighters accepted the call for Peace and surrendered at Seraba Reform Training Center. The fighters were shown on Amhara regional state media saying that they have accepted the call for peace because they have understood that the people of the region will gain nothing from this conflict execpt death and destruction. They said they are ready to pay back for the people they have wronged. The Fano leaders who surrendered include Alamrew Niguse and Emmanuel Tekalign.

According to the elders and religious leaders who attended the reception of Fano fighters at the Reform Training Center, it is praiseworthy these fighters accepted the call of the government and the people to make the region peaceful.

The deputy head of Amhara region peace and security bureau Berihun Mengistu has stated that the armed forces that accepted the call for peace and have surrendered their weapons to the government in Chilga Seraba camp. These Fano fighters will undergo trainings to reintegrate in society.

So far Fano did not address government’s this claim. Generally Fano groups do not admit when their fighters surrender.

Still tens of thousands of Fano fighters are fighting the regional and federal security forces. Despite several military operations conducted against Fano in the last year, the capabilities of Fano fighters could not be seriously degraded.
