Ethiopian President Sahle Work Zewde is reportedly set to quit. The President, in a tweet a few hours ago, hinted at her likely departure. She tweeted that she had to remain silent in the last one year.
Sahle Work Zewde was elected as the President of Ethiopia on October 25, 2018. The term of the Ethiopian President is six years. Reportedly, the President has intimated the relevant ministry that she does not want to continue as the President as her term is expiring this month.
Ethiopian president is elected by joint session of the House of People’s Representatives and the House of Federation. A candidate must get two third votes of the two houses to be elected as the president.
Is the Ethiopian President not interested in continuing as President or the ruling Prosperity Party led by the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed does not want to renew her term?
Sahle Work Zewde is reportedly from the Amhara ethnic group. Several senior Amhara politicians, who have been supporting the PM Abiy Ahmed since 2018, have parted ways with the Prime Minister. One of the reasons behind widening gulf between senior Amhara politicians and the Ethiopian PM is the ongoing military operation against the Fano militias in the Amhara region. The operation was launched last year.
The President is reportedly in disagreement with the Prime Minister on several issues including the situation in the Amhara region.
