Ethiopia: Hand Grenade Attack Disrupts a Public Rally in Woldia

A hand grenade attack disrupted a public rally held in Woldia city today. Woldia is situated in the Amhara region of Ethiopia. Scores of peace rallies were taken out today across the Amhara region today.

In Gondar, Dessie, Kombolcha, Debre Markos, Bahir Dar and scores of other towns and cities of the Amhara region, government backed peace rallies were held on Wednesday. The participants in these demonstrations called for peace and end to armed conflict in the region. Amhara region is largely destabilized due to a year long armed conflict between Fano militias and government forces.

Fano militias have been warning people since the start of this week against participating in government backed rallies. Today reportedly, rallies in 3 cities of the Amhara region were disrupted. In Woldia city, hand grenades were thrown at the rally. Several rally participants were injured and people dispersed. In Debre Berhan and Bahir Dar cities, Fano fighters targeted those who organized today’s demonstrations. Fano groups claim that the government forced people to attend today’s rallies.

While Fano fighters continue receiving immense local support in the Amhara region, people seems to be tired of year long armed conflict. Roads remain blocked. Majority of schools is not open. Business activities have been disrupted.
