Tigray Ethiopia: A letter written by Getachew Reda, the Tigray interim president, has given rise to speculations. Through this letter, the Tigray president has handed over his responsibilities to General Tadesse Werede, the head of security forces in Tigray.
The letter is applicable from Tuesday October 29. Interestingly, there is no mention of when Getachew Reda will retake charge. Speculations are going around that probably he will not return to Tigray. After signing the letter, reportedly he went to Addis Ababa.
Getachew Reda is a leading a splinter group of TPLF, Debretsion Gebremichael is leading the main TPLF faction. Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has split in two. TPLF Debretsion is demanding the removal of Getachew Reda from Tigray interim government.
Debretsion supporters claim that Getachew Reda has chickened out and new president will soon be appointed. Getachew Reda supporters, on the other hand, say that the president has been handing over charge in the past too. There is nothing extra ordinary about this letter. Whenever President leaves the region, he appoints a caretaker President to discharge official duties and he will return soon.
It remains to be seen if the Tigray interim president Getachew Reda will return to Tigray or not. He is a senior TPLF leader. He was appointed as the President last year. In recent months, he developed differences with other TPLF stalwarts. At a TPLF party congress held in August, Getachew Reda and his companions were expelled from TPLF, but he refused to recognize the decision.
