A 5.0 magnitude earthquake was recorded in Addis Ababa and surrounding areas on Monday night. The Ethiopian capital and nearby areas have felt several tremors of earthquake in the last 48 hours.
The 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Awash Afar. The tremor was recorded on Monday night, December 30th, 2024, at 11:27 pm local time. It was recorded at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface and felt as far as Addis Ababa.
According to the residents of the capital city, Addis Ababa condominiums were particularly affected. The noise has been heard in Ayat, Tafo, Arabsa, Jem and other condominium areas.
The earthquakes have become increasingly frightening and that their frequency is increasing, say Addis Ababa residents. There have been several earthquakes in Addis Ababa in the past 48 hours. In Awash located 37 km from the epicenter, the Monday night’s quake was felt as light shaking. Weak shaking was felt in Metehara, Debre Birhan, Gelemso, Abomsa, Bedesa, and Asbe Teferi.
Since Saturday afternoon, there have been repeated high-intensity tremors ranging from 4.6 to 5.0 felt in Addis Ababa, Methara, Debresina, Debre Birhan etc. More than 2,500 people have been displaced in Awash Fentale due to earthquakes this week, according to Awash Fentale district administration.
A recurring earthquake in the Awash Fentale area of the Afar region has damaged more than 100 houses, displaced 2,560 people, and killed livestock, said Adem Bahi, the Awash Fentale district administration officer.
