Ethiopia & Kenya Start Joint Operation against Oromo Liberation Army

Ethiopia and Kenya have launched a joint security operation against Oromo Liberation Army (OLA). OLA, an armed group, is mainly based in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. The chiefs of Ethiopian and Kenyan Intelligence agencies announced the launch of the security operation.

Ethiopian Intelligence Agency Chief Redwan Hussein and Head of Kenyan Intelligence Agency a General Nuredin Mohammed Haji held discussions and and confirmed the launch of the security operation. They said a coordinated operation has been started to implement the agreements signed to work together on peace and security issues.

The operation has been launched to fight terrorism, contraband trade, illegal human and arms trafficking in Ethiopia Kenya border areas. But according to Kenyan and Ethiopian security forces, the operation is mainly aimed at targeting OLAs’ camps located in border areas.

Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) has long been operating in the Oromia region of Ethiopia. But it has its hideouts in neighboring countries like Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan. Ethiopian government is trying to weaken OLA which is faced with the worst internal divisions. Around 3 months ago, Sanyi Negasa, an influential OLA commander, split with the main group led by Kumsa Dirriba Jal Marroo and signed peace deal with Oromia regional government. It seems that Ethiopian government, in coordination with neighboring Kenya, wants to strike decisive blows to the capabilities of the Oromo Liberation Army.
