Switzerland to Stop Development Aid for Eritrea

Switzerland has decided to cut off development aid for Eritrea. Since 2016, Eritrean government has been receiving aid from the Swiss government.

Swiss government has recently been reconsidering its foreign aid projects. But the termination of development aid for Eritrea is reportedly linked to Eritrean government’s refusal to cooperate with Swiss government on the issue of repatriation of Eritrean migrants.

According to Swiss officials, Eritrea is showing no positive response to Swiss government’s request. Swiss government wants Eritrean government to take back Eritrean migrants in Switzerland whose asylum cases have been rejected.

One of the main factors behind announcement of development for Eritrea in 2016 was Swiss government’s hope that it will convince Eritrea to take back its citizens living illegally in Switzerland. Swiss government has been considering the proposal of deporting Eritreans to a 3rd country but the parliament decided against it.

The decision of aid termination will be implemented in May this year. Thousands of Eritreans flee their country annually. Lack of economic opportunities and denial of fundamental human rights are two main causes behind migrations of Eritrean citizens.
