Eritrean Opposition Group Brigade Nhamedu to Meet in Ethiopia on Monday

Eritrean opposition group called Brigade Nhamedu is due to hold a conference in Ethiopia on Monday January 27. The conference was expected to be held last week but it was rescheduled to January 27.

Brigade Nhamedu is an anti Eritrean government political groups which came under spotlight in recent years. It wants to bring about democratic change in Eritrea. Eritrea, since its independence in 1993, has been ruled by one party called People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ). The party is led by chairman Isaias Afwerki who has been the president of Eritrea for over 3 decades. Not a single general election has been held in Eritrea so far. No political party is allowed to conduct any political activity in the country except PFDJ.

The conference organized by Brigade Nhamedu is expected to be attended by other Eritrean opposition groups too. Reportedly Eritrean Afar National Congress (EANC) has accepted the invitation to attend the conference. Red Sea Afar Democratic Organization (RSADO) could be another likely participant. Both EANC and RSADO are based in the Afar region of Ethiopia.

While Ethiopia Eritrea relation are tense, Ethiopia is publicly backing anti Eritrean government opposition groups. Eritrea is at the forefront of establishing an anti Ethiopia regional block. President of Somalia, Egypt and Eritrea met in Asmara in October 2024 to strengthen their alliance.
