Eritrea has reportedly expelled Sudan ambassador. Khalid Abbas, the Sudanese Chargé d’Affaires, has been given 72 hours to leave the country.
The Eritrean government has been supporting Sudanese army since the outbreak of war between Sudanese Defense Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April last year. Asmara’s decision to “expel” the Sudanese chargé d’affaires” without revealing the reasons is surprising. Some Political analysts consider this a new “position” by the Eritrean leadership towards the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
On Wednesday, the Eritrean authorities expelled the Sudanese Chargé d’Affaires, Ambassador Khaled Abbas, and gave him 72 hours to leave its territory, without providing any explanation for its decision, at a time when Sudan-Ethiopia relations began to improve following the visit of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to Port Sudan. After the Sudanese army considered Ethiopia one of the countries supporting the “Rapid Support Forces”, and its leaders directed harsh criticism at it, signs of “reconciliation” appeared following the visit.
Port Sudan did not issue any comments on Asmara’s sudden decision, at a time when there is no Eritrean diplomatic mission in Sudan.
The Eritrean decision to expel the Chargé d’Affaires coincided with the visit of Nazir Muhammad al-Amin Turk. Nazir is chairman of Beja High Council and is affiliated with SAF. He is seen as Eritrean asset in Eastern Sudan. Beja tribe is based in Eastern Sudan. Eritrea has been holding influence in Eastern Sudan for years.
These days, eastern Sudan is witnessing tension between its civil leaderships, exacerbated by the Al Burhan government’s move to Port Sudan.
According to some sources, Eritrean government’s decision to expel Sudanese diplomat “is linked to intelligence activity, communication and recruitment of agents that the Eritrean authorities have been monitoring for some time without his knowledge and considered to pose a threat to Eritrean national security.”
It remains to be seen if the decision to expel Sudanese diplomat is linked to activities in Eastern Sudan or it points towards change in Eritrean foreign policy about ongoing war in Sudan.
