Amhara Fano militias are blocking all main roads in the Amhara region starting from today. Three days ago, several Fano groups issued a joint statement announcing road closures starting from Thursday.
Since last year, the Ethiopian military has been conducting a security operation to disarm and disband Amhara Fano militias. The militias have managed to organize themselves on woreda and zonal level. They claim to be fighting against injustice allegedly being committed against the Amhara people of Ethiopia.
On Tuesday, in a press briefing, the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) and Amhara regional government announced the start of a full scale operation to crush Fano groups. The ENDF and Amhara government spokespersons said that Fano militias had closed all doors of dialogue and they were working in collusion with foreign and historical enemies of Ethiopia.
It remains to be seen if Amhara Fano militias will be able to block all main road in the Amhara region or not. Last month, Gojjam and Shewa Fano groups made calls for road blocks. For several days, movement of vehicles remained suspended in the two zones.
In a joint statement by Gondar, Gojjam, Shewa and Wollo Fano groups, they urged people to implement instructions regarding ban on vehicle movement, warning that drivers and others who violate the instructions will pay the price for that.
