Dera Oromia

A disturbing video in circulation in social media shows unknown number of people slaughtered with knives in Dera woreda of the Oromia region.

According to informed sources, the video is from the Dera woreda situated in the north Shewa zone of the Oromia region. Dera woreda has been plagued with ethnic Oromo-Amhara violence for years. The attackers, armed with knives, can be seen in the video slaughtering a youth calling him “Gala”, a derogatory term used for Oromos.

Locals of the area say that Amhara attackers stormed houses in Dera woreda and they killed Oromos indiscriminately. No official statement has been issued by the Oromia regional government or the federal government of Ethiopia.

Dera woreda has both Amhara and Oromo population. Local Amharas accuse Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) of carrying out attacks on Amhara civilians. Oromo community accuse Fano fighters of entering Dera from the Amhara region to arm local Amharas and carry out attacks on Oromo population.

For decades, Ethiopia has been battling with ethnic violence. Since most of such attacks go unpunished, ethnic massacres continue to be committed across Ethiopia.
