Ethiopian Troops Somalia

Ethiopian troops have reportedly arrested six soldiers of the federal forces of Somalia. The incident happened in Somalia. Ethiopian soldiers are working as peacekeepers in Somalia.

The six soldiers were arrested at Dolow airport. The airport is located in the Gedo region of Somalia. Gedo region is part of Jubaland federal member state of Somalia. Federal Government of Somalia and Jubaland Regional government are in dispute about a regional indirect election due to be held in Jubaland next week. Ethiopian troops are in control of Dolow and other airstrips/airports on Somalia side of Somalia Ethiopia border.

The arrested soldiers of Somalia’s federal forces were clad in civilian clothes. Jubaland has been warning federal government against disrupting next week’s election. Federal government has declared the election as “illegal”. It seems that Ethiopian troops deployed in Jubaland are supporting Jubaland in holding local election which is being opposed by the federal government of Somalia.

Somalia is against the continued Ethiopian military presence in Somalia. In a statement last week, the Defense Minister of Somalia announced that Ethiopian troops will not be part of the new peacekeeping mission in Somalia which will take over on January 1, 2025. Ethiopia-Somalia relations deteriorated at the start of this year when Ethiopia signed a controversial Memorandum of Understanding with Somaliland.
