Ethiopian government has imposed a ban on the activities of two human rights organizations. The Ethiopian authority which monitors civil society organizations imposed this ban. The banned organizations are the Center for the Advancement of Rights and Democracy (CARD) and the Association for Human Rights in Ethiopia (AHRE).
In separate letters sent to the companies late last week and this week, the authority informed them that the companies have been suspended from any activity. The bank accounts of the companies have also frozen.
The Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Authority (ACSO) in the letters accused the two organizations of meddling in politics and engaging in activities that harm the interests of the country and the people.
In response to the suspension, CARD released a public statement on November 22, 2024, vehemently contesting the allegations of political bias. The organization criticized ACSO for failing to adhere to proper legal procedures, such as providing prior notice, conducting a transparent investigation, or involving CARD in the decision-making process.
