Tigray Fighters Take Control of Mekelle, Shire & Axum Airports
Tigray fighters have taken control of Mekelle, Shire and Axum airports in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Civilian flights from Addis Ababa to Tigray have been suspended.
Last night, hundreds of Tigray fighters stormed three airports in Tigray: Mekelle, Aksum and Shire airports. Federal security officials, deployed at the airports by the federal government, were detained by Tigray fighters. Without any resistance, Tigray regional security officials took control of the airports reportedly.
Civilian flights from Addis Ababa for three airports in Tigray region have been suspended. No Ethiopian Airline flight took off from Addis Ababa for Tigray airports today. No civilian flights took off from the three airports. Ethiopian air force has been conducting drone strikes on Tigray for around two months. Yesterday, the air force carried out more than 20 drone strikes in southern and north western parts of Tigray. Tigray regional forces and Ethiopian federal forces signed Pretoria Peace deal in November 2022 after fighting for two years. But the deal could not lead to resolution of key issues.
Yesterday, Tigray regional government cancelled 2019 E.C. Meskel Demera celebrations. Orthodox festival Meskel Demera is going to be celebrated on September 27, 2026. The Tigray Culture and Tourism Bureau asked people to celebrate Meskel in religious institutions.
Reports are coming in about start of fighting between Tigray regional forces and Ethiopian federal forces in Tigray-Afar and Tigray-Amhara border areas. It seems that Ethiopian warring parties have returned to a full scale war.
