A woreda administrator has been shot dead in the Amhara region. The incident happened in the North Shewa zone of the region.
Albis Adefrash, the General Administrator of Efratana Gedim Woreda in Amhara region North Shewa zone has been killed. The woreda Communication office confirmed the incident. He was killed on Saturday night. Unknown attackers opened fire at him near his residence in Efratana Giddim.
Since the start of armed resistance movement in the Amhara region last year, dozens of government officials and Prosperity Party members have been assassinated. Assassination and ambush are two main weapons being used by Amhara Fano militia members against the Ethiopian security forces.
Ethiopian military launched a military operation against Fano to disarm and disband Fano militias more than a year. Since then heavy clashes have been ongoing in North Shewa, Gondar, Gojjam and Wollo zones. Fano militias accuse the Ethiopian government of committing genocide of the Amhara ethnic group members.
The Ethiopian government is of the view that Amhara Fano militias, backed by external enemies, are destabilizing the region and they want to remove the government by force. Despite the imposition and extension of state of emergency in the Amhara region, Fano groups could not be crushed by the Ethiopian security forces.
Woreda level Prosperity Party leaders and government officials are in a difficult position. If they actively participate in the military operation against Fano, they are at the risk of assassination by Fano. On the other hand, if they do not comply with government instruction, they will either lose their jobs or they could be thrown into prisons by the government.
Last year, Girma Yeshitila, a senior Amhara Prosperity Party leader, was shot dead. Girma was from North Shewa and he was killed in his home zone. Ethiopian government accused Amhara Fano commanders of having killed the Prosperity Party leader.
