Ethiopian Military today claimed that two Fano commanders had been killed. The commanders were killed in the operation conducted by the Airborne Division of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF).
“Two extremists were destroyed in North Shewa zone, ” the ENDF posted on its social media page today.
Yitagesu Adamu and Birhanu Gule were killed in Merhabete Woreda which situated in North Shewa zone of the Amhara regio. The operation was launched by ENDF Colonel Mathews Madebo. The Colonel claimed that some Fano fighters had also been killed along with the the 2 main Fano commanders.
ENDF shared pictures of the commanders killed. It posted pictures of vehicles captured from the killed Fano fighters.
Ethiopian military has conducted several operations against Fano militias in the Amhara region. The armed conflict in Amhara began last year when government tried to disarm and disband Fano groups. Fano groups were trained and armed by the Ethiopian military to fight Tigray fighters. War between Tigray fighters and federal forces ended in November 2022. After that, government announced to dismantle Fano groups, which led to the start of clashes between Fano and military. Thousands have been killed and injured as a result of the armed conflict in the Amhara region of Ethiopia so far.
