Thousands of the residents marched in Southern Tigray today. The protesters condemned recent remarks by TPLF chairman Debretsion Gebremichael.
The protests in southern Tigray started on Thursday. Residents of Maychew town took out protest rallies in Maychew town. Today demonstrations were held in Mehoni and other cities of southern Tigray. Haftu Kiros, Southern Tigray Zonal Administrator, led today’s rally in Mehoni town. Youths, women and children protested in today’s protest rallies. They displayed banners, calling for peace.
Southern Tigray is seen as the stronghold of those who back Getachew Reda, the former President of Tigray who was ousted by TPLF and Tigray military recently. The zonal government in southern Tigray consists of Getachew Reda loyalists.
Last week, Debretsion Gebremichael, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front Chairman, in an interview said new zonal and local governments will be established in southern Tigray.
The protests in southern Tigray are aimed at preventing likely attempt by TPLF and Tigray military to dismantle local governments in southern Tigray.
